African filmmakers are entering September with an unusually broad slate of premieres, streaming releases and festival appearances spanning North, West, East and Southern Africa.

The range matters. Social satire, family drama, experimental work and popular genre filmmaking challenge the tendency to treat African cinema as a single aesthetic or market.

The next challenge is economic: festival recognition must translate into distribution, sustainable careers and audiences able to watch African films legally in their own countries.
